MRI scans may allow prostate cancer diagnosis without invasive biopsies
New research suggests that MRI scans may be able to accurately diagnose prostate cancer in some cases, potentially sparing thousands of men from undergoing invasive and painful biopsies. The study, involving patients at University College London Hospitals (UCLH), examined the effectiveness of using MRI results combined with patient age and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) scores to identify tumors.
Currently, many men suspected of having prostate cancer are referred directly for a biopsy, a procedure involving needle insertion that carries risks of infection and bleeding. While NHS guidelines recommend an MRI first to determine the necessity of a biopsy, limited scanner capacity and workforce shortages often result in patients skipping this step.
Researchers noted that imaging alone is already used to treat other cancers, such as kidney and liver cancer, without initial biopsies. If these findings are confirmed through further research, the use of MRI could allow for earlier diagnosis when the disease is most treatable while avoiding the side effects and discomfort associated with traditional biopsy methods.
