Mária Schmidt's foundation network faces impact from Hungarian asset dissolution

The Hungarian government's plan to dissolve public interest asset management foundations (KEKVAs) will significantly impact the network of institutions established by historian Mária Schmidt. Her primary organization, the Foundation for Research of Central and Eastern European History and Society (KKeTTK), oversees a vast network of institutes that have shaped historical narratives aligned with the Fidesz party's discourse.

As these foundations are liquidated, the state will inherit substantial assets, including museums, literary legacies, villas in Buda, and various buildings in Budapest. Reports indicate the KKeTTK's asset value reached approximately 5.7 billion HUF in its 2025 report. Specific assets include a villa on Határőr út, which received 2.2 billion HUF in non-refundable renovation grants, and other properties on Teréz körút and Podmaniczky utca.

While Schmidt has stated that her foundation only received the legally required minimum capital, investigations suggest a much larger accumulation of wealth through state support and property transfers. The future management and utilization of this extensive infrastructure remain uncertain within the current administration.
