Mérida and Cancun host cultural celebrations: Maya language academy anniversary and theater comedy night

The Academia Municipal de la Lengua Maya “Itzamná” in Mérida marked its 41st anniversary with a series of events, including a public talk and regional folk dances on May 30. Established in 1985, the academy began certifying Maya language interpreters in 2012 and has trained over 2,300 students, graduating more than 210 certified interpreters. Its work contributed to Mérida receiving a UNESCO recognition for the “Mérida Ta Wéetel” campaign in 2025.

In Cancun, the Casa de la Cultura presented “Celebrando el Arte de Reír” on May 30, a free theatrical evening showcasing three productions – “Paso de Madrugada” by Emilio Carballido, “La Abuela Perla” by Denis Vento, and “La Conciencia” by Alicia Villavicencio – highlighting humor as a means to connect audiences and explore human emotions.
