Urioste appointment sparks controversy as La Concordia extortionist is detained
In Bolivia, the appointment of interim Prosecutor General José Armando Urioste Viera has sparked controversy following his admission that an unnamed businessman, a former client, requested his curriculum vitae shortly before his selection by the Plurinational Legislative Assembly. Urioste stated he was unaware of how his name reached the Assembly after five failed voting rounds, and he has refused to disclose the identity of the businessman. Vice President Edmand Lara has called for full transparency, demanding the name of the individual responsible for the nomination to ensure institutional integrity.
In Mexico, authorities in Mérida have detained Luis Eduardo L. C., a suspected member of the La Concordia association. He is accused of extortion targeting street vendors in Ciudad Caucel. Prosecutors allege that between May and July, the suspect demanded weekly payments of 300 pesos from vendors in exchange for protection, threatening them with the loss of their livelihoods if they failed to pay. The defendant remains in preventive custody while the legal process continues.
