Mérida authorities prosecute individuals for fraud and counterfeit currency
Authorities in Mérida, Yucatán, have moved forward with legal proceedings against two individuals involved in separate fraudulent activities.
The Federal Attorney General's Office (FGR) has linked Fernando N. to a process for the alleged use of counterfeit currency. The individual attempted to pay for goods at a business in the city center using suspected counterfeit 200-peso notes. Upon detection of the inconsistencies by staff, local police intervened and seized 11 pieces of currency totaling 2,200 pesos. Perceptual analysis revealed the notes lacked watermarks, security threads, and proper texture. A judge has imposed precautionary measures, including a requirement for periodic appearances and a prohibition on leaving the state.
Separately, the Yucatán State Attorney General's Office (FGE) has charged Liany Nery A. P. with fraud and the use of falsified documents. The charges stem from the sale of a Nissan vehicle for 175,000 pesos using a fraudulent invoice. The victim discovered the deception when the vehicle was detained by the Secretariat of Public Security during an ownership transfer attempt. This case is linked to a broader investigation into a network responsible for approximately 60 vehicle-related frauds in the region.
