Mérida authorities take custody of dogs Oso and Blanquis
The dogs Oso and Blanquis have been placed under the care of the Municipal Animal Care Center (CEMAA) in Mérida, Mexico, after their owner, Don Jacinto, voluntarily surrendered them. The decision follows health complications within the owner's family, specifically a delicate illness affecting one of his brothers, which has made it difficult to maintain the animals' care.
The surrender occurred following a report that the dogs had escaped and had an incident with a neighbor. While legal proceedings regarding a previous incident involving a neighbor remain open, municipal officials stated that the owner initiated the contact to request the animals be taken into custody to ensure the safety of both the dogs and the community.
The Mérida City Council is coordinating with the System for Integral Family Development (DIF) to support the owner's family during their health crisis. Authorities have ruled out humanitarian euthanasia for Oso and Blanquis, noting they are receiving veterinary care at the Municipal Veterinary Clinic while the city seeks a responsible new home for them.
