Mérida authorities warn of AI-driven voice and video scams
Authorities in Mérida, Mexico, have issued warnings regarding scams utilizing artificial intelligence to manipulate voices and videos. Lissette Estrada Ortega, Director of Innovation and Intelligent Government for the Mérida City Council, noted that elderly citizens are particularly vulnerable to these deepfake technologies due to a lack of familiarity with AI tools.
The municipal government is working to reinforce digital security, data protection, and the identification of official inspectors. Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious activity through the 911 emergency line so that cases can be investigated by the Prosecutor's Office.
