Mérida bullfighting protests lead to tension and security intervention

Protests regarding the practice of bullfighting led to moments of tension in Mérida, Mexico, at the Monumento a la Patria this Sunday. The event involved two opposing groups: a small contingent of four anti-bullfighting activists and a larger group of approximately 300 supporters, including breeders, ranchers, and bullfighters.

The anti-bullfighting group, led by activist Elsa Arceo, sought to raise awareness regarding animal cruelty. The pro-bullfighting group, led by Diana Peniche Marenco, argued that the practice is a vital cultural tradition in Yucatán, linked to patron saint festivals and local economies.

Tension escalated when the larger pro-bullfighting group moved toward the area occupied by the activists, resulting in shouting and shoving. Elements of the Secretaría de Seguridad Pública (SSP) intervened to protect the activists and prevent a larger physical confrontation. Following the intervention, the pro-bullfighting group continued their demonstration and marched along Paseo de Montejo.
