Mérida celebrates 20 years of Bici-Ruta program

The city of Mérida celebrated the 20th anniversary of its Bici-Ruta program, a community initiative that transforms major thoroughfares into recreational spaces for cycling, skating, and walking. The event took place on Paseo de Montejo, where Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada joined residents to mark two decades of the program.

Established in 2006, the initiative has grown from a 10-kilometer route into a 13.9-kilometer path connecting various cultural landmarks, including the Gran Parque de La Plancha and the Monumento a la Patria. The program has evolved to include the Biciescuela, a cycling school for beginners, and monthly nighttime routes.

During the anniversary festivities, municipal authorities announced plans to permanently expand the nighttime recreational routes to allow more residents to utilize illuminated public spaces for community connection and exercise.
