Mérida City Council and TECHO México deliver emergency housing to 10 families

Ten families in the La Estrella del Sur settlement in Mérida, Yucatán, have received emergency housing through a collaborative project between the Mérida City Council and the TECHO México Foundation. This initiative marks the beginning of TECHO México’s operations in southeastern Mexico.

The emergency homes are prefabricated and demountable structures measuring 5 by 4 meters. Constructed from wood with fiber cement roofing, each unit includes a door, two windows, an LED lamp powered by a solar panel, and hammock reinforcements. Arturo León Itzá, Director of Social Development and Poverty Combat, noted that each home has a market value of approximately 120,000 pesos.

The beneficiaries had previously been assigned space by the Yucatán State Housing Institute (IVEY). The project involved approximately 120 volunteers and local residents. Authorities indicated that efforts are underway to manage an additional 30 homes to expand the project's reach within the settlement.
