Mérida City Council faces daily cyberattack attempts

The Mérida City Council faces daily cyberattack attempts, according to Lissette Estrada Ortega, the municipal director of Innovation and Intelligent Government. During the inauguration of the Cybermid 2026 Cybersecurity Week, Estrada Ortega noted that these attempts include identity theft, credential theft, and impersonation through various digital channels.

To mitigate these risks, the municipality employs a cybersecurity team that monitors platforms 24/7. Security protocols include mandatory periodic password changes for municipal officials and the implementation of two-factor authentication. Estrada Ortega emphasized that while all companies and municipalities face such threats, the city's measures are designed to protect citizen data and personal information.

Mérida has also become the first city in Mexico to join the Alianza México Ciberseguro. Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada stated that this integration is part of a broader effort to build a digital Mérida through innovation, artificial intelligence, and technological infrastructure to promote preventive public policies.
