Mérida enhances archaeological and cultural heritage through new projects
The city of Mérida is launching several initiatives to highlight its Roman and historical heritage. The municipal government has announced a project for the Santa Eulalia square, involving an investment of over 316,000 euros to protect and integrate four archaeological sites. This intervention will feature walkable glass structures, allowing visitors to view remains such as a mausoleum, a frigidarium natatio from ancient Roman baths, and other significant structures beneath the square.
In addition to urban archaeological works, the National Museum of Roman Art in Mérida is hosting an exhibition featuring 94 treasures from ancient Hispania. The collection includes marbles, bronzes, mosaics, and daily objects that illustrate Roman life, social organization, and craftsmanship.
Cultural programming also includes 'Mérida Sepulcral 2026', a series of guided tours at the municipal cemetery. Held on four Sundays in November, these 90-minute walks aim to explore the city's funerary traditions, monuments, and the historical lives of its inhabitants through epitaphs and symbolic architecture.
