Chile declares state of catastrophe in Tocopilla amid severe weather FAST-MOVING

Severe weather systems are causing widespread emergencies across northern Chile and parts of Mexico. In Chile, intense rainfall and mudslides (aluviones) have triggered a state of catastrophe in the Tocopilla province, decreed by President José Antonio Kast. Authorities have evacuated approximately 2,000 people in the Antofagasta region, including 535 inmates from the Tocopilla Preventive Detention Center. Senapred has issued Red Alerts for Antofagasta, Taltal, Mejillones, and Tocopilla, while Iquique faces evacuation orders in the Zofri, Barrio Industrial, and Marinero Desconocido sectors due to mudslide risks.

In Mexico, municipal governments are responding to heavy rains. In Puebla, Mayor Pepe Chedraui has deployed preventive measures and permanent attention to mitigate flooding. In Culiacán, municipal crews are performing cleaning and desilting works to manage water flow. Meanwhile, in Mérida, Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada has announced a long-term hydrological infrastructure project in collaboration with the OECD to address urban flooding and climate change impacts.
