Mérida inaugurates Educazoo environmental education space

The Mérida municipal government has inaugurated Educazoo, a new environmental education space within the Parque Zoológico del Centenario. The opening coincided with the 116th anniversary of the zoo.

Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada stated that the project aims to transform the zoo's role from mere animal exhibition to a center for conservation, protection, and environmental education. The program is designed to help children, youth, and families learn how to protect various species and biodiversity.

Educazoo offers free activities including didactic stations, crafts using recyclable materials, talks, exhibitions, and guided tours. The program also includes inclusive tours conducted in Mexican Sign Language for individuals with hearing impairments. Program coordinator Zacil-ha Tuz Barrera noted that the activities are designed for all ages to ensure that learned knowledge can be applied to daily life. Additionally, the space will feature hourly educational video projections regarding the zoo's history and evolution.
