Mérida Mayor and South Korean Ambassador strengthen bilateral ties

Mérida Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada met with the South Korean Ambassador to Mexico, Jooil Lee, to strengthen cultural, tourism, and commercial ties between the city and the South Korean community.

The meeting focused on preserving the historical legacy of Korean migration to Yucatán, which dates back to 1905. Officials discussed expanding cultural exchanges and promoting the study of the Korean language. The visit included a tour of sites commemorating the Korean presence in Mérida, such as the Korean Immigration Memorial Museum in Yucatán, the Republic of Korea Avenue, the Centennial Monument of Korean Migration, and the Korea-Mexico Friendship Hospital.

Local authorities highlighted the importance of the Greetingman sculpture by Yoo Young-ho, located on Republic of Korea Avenue, as a symbol of friendship. The Korean community in Mérida is estimated to include more than 7,000 descendants.
