Mérida police cite 19 drivers for mobile phone use

The Mérida Local Police reported 19 drivers were cited for using mobile phones while driving during a recent enforcement period. Between October 5 and October 11, officers inspected 1,234 vehicles and issued a total of 52 traffic citations for various infractions.

Distractions accounted for 29 of the total citations. Specifically, 19 drivers were penalized for mobile phone use, three for manipulating electronic devices or navigators, two for using headphones, and five for other distracting behaviors. This enforcement coincided with a special campaign by the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) targeting driving distractions.

During the same week, 12 traffic accidents were recorded in the city. While these incidents included collisions caused by failing to yield or respect right-of-way signs, no injuries were reported, with only material damage occurring.
