Mérida protesters demand break in ties with Israel
Between 700 and 1,000 protesters marched through the historic center of Mérida, Yucatán, to demand that the state government sever diplomatic and business ties with Israel. Demonstrators expressed solidarity with Palestine and warned that the entry of Israeli companies into the region could threaten Mayan territories and local water resources, specifically the peninsula's aquifer.
The marchers also voiced support for Josefina Ramos, a 70-year-old woman conducting a sit-in at the Government Palace to demand essential services and basic rights. The protest included various collectives and activists who highlighted local issues, including gender-based violence, excessive utility charges, and difficulties accessing pensions.
Participants specifically criticized a 2021 Letter of Intent signed by Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal with the Israeli Embassy, calling for transparency regarding the state's current relationship with Israel.
