Mérida specialists warn of explosion risks from damaged electrical infrastructure

Specialists in Mérida have issued warnings regarding damaged electrical manhole covers in the city's Historic Center. Alberto Ojeda Arauza, president of the Colegio de Ingenieros Mecánicos y Electricistas de Yucatán (CIMEY), reported that at least three medium-voltage installations are in poor condition, posing risks to pedestrians and motorists.

These installations house lines carrying 13,700 volts. Experts warn that collapsing covers could cause vehicles to fall into the manholes, potentially leading to fires or explosions upon contact with energized conductors. This follows a previous incident in late August where a metal cover displaced and emitted smoke, causing power interruptions in the area.
