Mérida strengthens pediatric oncology and child welfare services

The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Yucatán is strengthening pediatric oncology care through OncoCREAN, the State Reference Center for the Care of Children with Cancer. Located at the UMAE Hospital de Especialidades CMN ‘Ignacio García Téllez’ in Mérida, the center provides multidisciplinary care to children from Yucatán, Campeche, and Quintana Roo. The facility offers specialized services in oncology, neurosurgery, pediatric hematology, and social work, utilizing advanced technology to treat conditions such as leukemia, brain tumors, and bone or renal tumors.

In a separate development regarding child welfare, the city of Mérida has been awarded the 2026 National ‘Child-Friendly City’ Award in the ‘Health and Services’ category. Presented by the Mexican Network of Child-Friendly Cities (RMCAN), the recognition highlights Mérida’s public policies aimed at ensuring the rights and well-being of children and adolescents, including initiatives like the Municipal Autism Center.
