Mérida strengthens potato seed production to reduce imports

In Mérida, Venezuela, authorities are strengthening the national production of potato seeds and other strategic agricultural crops. The initiative aims to substitute imports and reduce technological dependency within the agricultural sector.

Yván Gil Pinto, Minister of Science and Technology, inspected the Center for Biotechnology for Training in the Production of Agamic Seeds (Cebisa) in the Rangel municipality. During the visit, he announced a new phase focused on seed multiplication and the genetic improvement of crops to ensure high-quality biological inputs.

The project involves a scientific-peasant alliance, coordinating multidisciplinary teams and local producers to increase yields per hectare. This effort is part of a broader strategy to consolidate productive sovereignty and food security through domestic biotechnological development.
