Mérida unveils ‘Ik Balam’ sculpture in Xcumpich

Mérida Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada unveiled ‘Ik Balam’ (Jaguar of the Wind), a sculpture donated by artist Juan Pablo Mier y Terán, at the Galerías-Vector Francisco de Montejo roundabout in the Xcumpich neighborhood.

The artwork integrates the Maya glyphs Ik (wind) and Balam (jaguar) through organic, circular, and elliptical shapes. The installation is the first step in the ‘Mérida Enchula, Arte y Cultura’ strategy, which aims to integrate art into the city's daily urban landscape using works from Yucatecan and Oaxacan artists.

Future projects under this initiative include works such as ‘Estela 18 Uxmal-Chac Chel’, ‘Pájaro Thó’ by William Gaber, ‘El Nido’ by Amador Montes, and ‘Amor’ by Víctor Argáez, focusing on themes of memory, community, and Maya culture.
