Mérida Zoo Adds Five Freshwater Sharks to Main Lake

The Zoológico del Centenario in Mérida, Yucatán, has introduced five juvenile freshwater sharks to its main lake as part of a renovation and environmental‑education initiative. The young fish, measuring 30–40 cm, are expected to grow up to 1.5 m and become a prominent attraction.

The introduction is overseen by a specialist in freshwater and marine fish, with municipal services director Luis Jorge Montalvo Duarte confirming the project aims to enrich visitor experience and promote conservation. Signage and an adapted educational space will provide information about the species and ecosystem protection.

The zoo, which draws 8,000–10,000 visitors on weekends (about 6,000 at the adjoining Animaya zoo), expects the sharks to boost interest and educational outreach for families and students.
