Mérida’s Historic Lucas de Gálvez Market Reopened After Renovation

The municipal government of Mérida, Yucatán, led by mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada, completed a comprehensive renovation of the 138‑year‑old Lucas de Gálvez market. The project removed 45 informal stalls, restored sidewalks in the “La Pepita” area, and added more than 200 m² of pedestrian space to improve mobility and accessibility.

A new coworking zone called “La Placita” was created to provide workspaces for students and entrepreneurs, alongside a photographic exhibition of the market’s history. The renovation also installed a monumental “Mérida” sign, native‑plant landscaping, shade structures, and murals by artist Rodrigo Leal, enhancing the market’s cultural identity and tourist appeal. Officials said the investment benefits hundreds of merchant families and strengthens the city’s historic and community character.
