Mérida's Periférico faces infrastructure strain from urban growth

The Periférico in Mérida is facing significant challenges due to rapid urban expansion. Originally designed as a highway bypass, the infrastructure now functions as a metropolitan avenue, serving residential areas, industrial parks, hospitals, and universities that have developed around it over the last two decades.

Increased traffic volume has placed immense pressure on the road design. Key issues include insufficient acceleration lanes at various access points, making it difficult for drivers to merge safely with high-speed traffic. The distributor at the Umán exit is identified as a particularly high-risk area where merging, exiting, and through-traffic converge, often leading to slow movement and congestion during peak hours.

Proposed solutions to modernize the roadway include redesigning entry and exit zones, expanding acceleration and deceleration lanes, and improving overall traffic channeling to accommodate the current metropolitan reality.
