Märkischer Kreis implements AI-driven flood early warning system

The Märkischer Kreis in Germany has launched the development of a district-wide early warning system for heavy rain and flooding. This initiative involves all 15 cities and municipalities within the district and is a direct response to the catastrophic flooding caused by Storm Bernd in July 2021, which resulted in significant damage and the deaths of two firefighters.

The system utilizes intelligent sensors to monitor water levels and soil moisture, supplemented by real-time weather data from the German Weather Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst). A specialized, learning-capable artificial intelligence will process this data in real time to identify patterns and predict flood risks. According to the manufacturer, the system can provide warnings up to 60 minutes before a flood wave arrives, particularly for smaller water bodies that previously lacked reliable measurement data.

Once the sensors are installed, the AI will undergo a learning phase of up to twelve months to process new measurement values. The system is intended to provide emergency services, including fire departments and water authorities, with a critical time advantage to better coordinate responses and identify where assistance is most needed.
