mRNA technology advances toward personalized melanoma treatments
mRNA technology is expanding beyond COVID-19 vaccines into diverse therapeutic applications, including treatments for cancer, autoimmune diseases, and rare genetic disorders. A recent scientific review highlights how advancements in lipid nanoparticle design allow for more targeted delivery of mRNA to specific tissues.
In the field of oncology, Merck and Moderna have reported positive results from the phase 3 INTerpath-001 study involving approximately 1,100 patients with high-risk melanoma. This therapeutic vaccine is personalized, designed based on the specific molecular signature of a patient's tumor and administered after surgical removal to enhance the chances of a cure.
Paolo Ascierto, an oncology professor at Federico II University and director at the Istituto Nazionale Tumori Pascale in Naples, is a key figure in this research. He serves as the Italian coordinator for the INTerpath-001 study and was the first scientist in Italy to administer this personalized vaccine.
