MRPL refinery explosion in Mangaluru kills one and injures nine

A major explosion and subsequent fire occurred at the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) facility in Mangaluru, Karnataka, on Wednesday. The incident took place at approximately 12:15 p.m. within the Coker Hydro Treating Unit (CHTU) during testing operations.

One person, identified as 30-year-old electrician Manish, was killed in the blast. Nine other workers sustained injuries, including Rajesh Baptist, who suffered approximately 35 percent burns and was admitted to the intensive care unit. Officials noted that a larger tragedy was averted because many workers had already left the unit following a shift change.

The force of the explosion caused significant structural damage to the surrounding area. Estimates indicate that 54 houses and eight places of worship in nearby villages, including Jokatte, Kalavaru, and Bala, were damaged. Residents reported feeling intense vibrations, and many windows and doors were shattered by the shockwaves.

Preliminary findings suggest the blast may have been caused by the rupture of a cold separator operating at 70 bar pressure. Karnataka Minister UT Khader confirmed that a senior officer has been appointed to conduct a formal inquiry into the cause of the accident. Emergency teams have since brought the fire under control.
