MSC Musica rescues eight men from stranded boat near Ibiza

The MSC Musica rescued eight men from North Africa after their small vessel was spotted stranded in the Western Mediterranean. The incident occurred on July 31, approximately 16 miles from the Port of Ibiza, while the cruise ship was en route to the Spanish island from Civitavecchia.

The stranded boat had a non-functioning outboard motor, no sails, and lacked secondary propulsion or sufficient supplies. Following international maritime law (SOLAS), the crew, led by First Mate Roberto de Girolamo, conducted a rescue operation using a lifeboat to transfer the men to the ship. The individuals were subsequently transferred to the care of the Spanish Coast Guard. The rescue did not cause significant delays to the cruise ship’s docking schedule or passenger excursions.
