MSC, the world’s largest container shipping company, has announced the partial resumption of transits through the Suez Canal on select East-West services. This decision follows a comprehensive review of security and operational conditions in the Red Sea region.

The transition will be gradual, affecting both eastbound and westbound voyages starting in late August 2026. Specific services involved include the Jade, Albatros, Himalaya, and Tiger lines, connecting Asia and India with the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. Initial sailings include the MSC Michel Cappellini departing Abu Kir on August 24, 2026, and the MSC Beryl departing Vizhinjam on August 31, 2026.

This move marks a shift away from the massive diversions around the Cape of Good Hope that began in December 2023 following Houthi militia attacks on merchant vessels. While MSC is returning to the corridor, the company emphasized that crew safety and cargo security remain the highest priorities, noting that they will continue to monitor the regional security situation closely in coordination with authorities and security partners.

Other major shipping lines, including Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, have also begun returning individual services to the Red Sea route. Maersk recently recorded the successful transit of the 190,000-ton Bangkok Maersk through the canal.
