MSF intensifies medical response to cholera and measles in South Kivu

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is intensifying its medical and humanitarian response in Shabunda, South Kivu, to combat cholera and measles outbreaks affecting thousands. The organization has strengthened its capacity to treat patients, support health facilities, and prevent new infections in this difficult-to-access territory.

Between July 3 and August 21, MSF-supported health centers treated 1,161 measles patients, while hospitals treated an additional 406. To combat cholera, MSF established a treatment center at the Shabunda General Reference Hospital and three intermediate centers in Mungembe, Ndea, and Kinkobongo/Kamushale, treating over 500 patients.

In addition to direct care, MSF provides medical supplies and logistical support to six other health structures and assists with water, hygiene, and sanitation. The organization also supported the Ministry of Health in a measles and rubella vaccination campaign, which reached 111,233 children aged 6 months to 14 years. Operations remain challenged by poor road conditions, insecurity, and limited aerial access.
