Brazil launches nationwide organ and blood donation campaigns

Various health awareness campaigns are being conducted across Brazil throughout September, centered on the ‘Setembro Verde’ (Green September) movement. These initiatives focus on promoting organ and tissue donation, as well as blood donation, to address shortages and reduce refusal rates.

In Juiz de Fora, the Santa Casa de Misericórdia is running awareness actions to encourage family dialogue regarding organ donation, noting a 60% refusal rate in the Zona da Mata region. Similarly, in Rio de Janeiro, the 5th ‘Remada Setembro Verde’ event in Urca combines rowing with transplant awareness. In Santa Catarina, APAR-SC is hosting the ‘RIMovimento 2026’ to prevent chronic kidney disease and promote donation.

Blood donation drives are also active in several municipalities. Bonito is hosting a campaign in partnership with Hemosul to replenish low stocks, while Diamantino is organizing a drive through UNEMAT and MT-Hemocentro. Additionally, over 32,000 Brazilians have now used notary offices to digitally formalize their intent to be organ donors via the e-Notariado platform.
