Mt Kenya leaders call for unity amid regional division concerns

Political leaders in Kenya are addressing growing tensions regarding the potential division of the Mt Kenya region into East and West factions. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has called for regional unity and tolerance, emphasizing that peaceful coexistence is essential for national development and stability.

Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has urged the Kiama Kiama Council of Elders to denounce what he describes as a narrative of “hatred” promoted by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua against Mt Kenya East. Ruku warned that failing to address these divisive remarks could lead to political and economic decoupling of the two sub-regions. He argued that Mt Kenya East deserves greater recognition due to its historical role in the Mau Mau struggle for independence.

The regional divide involves a distinction between Mt Kenya East, comprising Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Meru counties, and Mt Kenya West, which includes Kiambu, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Nyandarua, and parts of Laikipia. While Kindiki advocates for cohesion and support for the current government, critics suggest the political rift is being fueled by opposition efforts to undermine regional solidarity.
