MTA advances final contract for $6.97B Second Avenue Subway extension

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has issued a request for qualifications for the fourth and final construction contract for the $6.97 billion Second Avenue Subway Phase 2 project. This largest contract package aims to extend Q line service approximately 1.5 miles north from the current 96th Street terminus into East Harlem.

The extension will include three new accessible stations at 106th Street, 116th Street, and 125th Street. Construction will involve station platforms, entrance canopies, six ancillary buildings, tracks, signaling, and communications systems. The project also includes the installation of 22 elevators and 20 escalators.

The MTA plans to issue a request for proposals to qualified contractors by the end of 2026, with contractor selection expected in mid-2027. Work on this final contract is slated to begin in 2027, with the project expected to enter revenue service by the fall of 2032.
