MTA auctions retired MetroCard vending machines to collectors

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has auctioned off more than 60 retired MetroCard vending machines to transit enthusiasts and collectors. The auction, which ran from August 5 to August 19, saw 380 bids, with the agency finalizing sales for 31 machines so far. Some units fetched prices as high as $3,000.

The machines, which first debuted in 1999, are no longer functional as the MTA removed all internal computer parts, electronic components, and payment processing systems prior to the sale. Buyers were responsible for all logistics and transport from a warehouse in Maspeth, Queens.

Collectors included Noah Mallin, who purchased an express machine for approximately $3,000 to use as a historical display, and artist Brian Moore, who paid $2,250 and arranged transport to Los Angeles. Additionally, the MTA donated several machines to the New York City public school system, including installations at Stuyvesant High School and Transit Tech CTE High School.
