MTA clarifies OMNY fare-capping rules and explores new structures
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is launching an awareness campaign to clarify how the OMNY fare-capping system works. To qualify for the 7-day, $35 fare cap, passengers must use the same payment method for every trip, such as the same OMNY card, bank card, or mobile device.
MTA Chairman Janno Lieber noted that the agency is working with developers to improve turnstile displays, which currently do not show fare progress or balances. Passengers can also use OMNY website accounts to track their ride history and progress toward the cap.
Looking ahead to potential fare increases in 2027, Lieber expressed interest in exploring more diverse and equity-oriented fare structures. While the current system relies on a rolling weekly cap to avoid requiring large upfront payments, the MTA is studying different technological applications to attract more riders and provide more flexible options beyond the existing model.
