MTA expands automated camera enforcement to more NYC bus routes

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is expanding its Automated Camera Enforcement (ACE) program to several additional bus routes in New York City. The expansion includes the Q8 route in Queens, with fines beginning August 14, and the Bx21, B8, B9, and Q101 routes spanning the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens. A 60-day warning period for the latter routes is scheduled to begin on August 17.

The program aims to improve bus reliability and speed by penalizing motorists who improperly use busways, block bus stops, or engage in illegal double parking. Fines for violations start at $50 and can escalate to $250 for repeat offenders.

As part of the ‘Next Stop: Fast Buses, Better Service’ plan, the ACE program has already been implemented on 71 routes. The MTA reports that the program, administered alongside the New York City Department of Transportation and the New York City Department of Finance, has helped increase bus speeds by nearly 30% on certain segments of equipped routes.
