MTA expands stroller spaces on all New York City buses

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced that its pilot program allowing unfolded strollers on buses will be expanded system‑wide to every New York City bus. The change follows a multi‑year trial that began in late 2022, after advocacy from parents and funding approved by the New York State legislature.

New York City Transit President Demetrius Crichlow said the designated stroller areas are separate from wheelchair priority seats, addressing concerns from disability advocates. State Senator Andrew Gounardes highlighted the broader accessibility benefits, noting that the bus system must accommodate strollers, shopping carts and other devices as well as mobility‑limited riders. The expansion is funded by state money and aims to make bus boarding easier for families with young children.

The program’s rollout reflects a response to long‑standing parent complaints that the previous policy required strollers to be folded before boarding, which they described as a “nightmare.” Officials expect the new spaces to improve the daily commute for many New Yorkers.
