NYC MTA proposes 4% fare hike for 2027

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has outlined a proposal to raise subway, bus, bridge and tunnel tolls by 4% beginning in March 2027. The increase would lift the current $3 base subway fare to roughly $3.10‑$3.15, depending on rounding. A second identical 4% increase is planned for 2029. The agency says the hikes are meant to offset inflation and rising operating costs and to address projected deficits of $295 million in 2027 that could grow to about $900 million by 2030. The MTA estimates the 2027 increase would generate roughly $500,000 extra revenue per day, based on an average daily subway ridership of about four million passengers and about six million total public‑transport trips. The proposal is part of the MTA’s preliminary financial plan and must undergo public hearings and a board vote before it can be approved.
