MTA rolls out cashless vending machines at New York subway stations
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced the installation of cashless vending machines in 26 New York City subway stations. The first three locations – 2nd Avenue on the F line, 23 St on the R/W lines, and 116 St on the 6 line – are already operating, with plans to add another 23 stations next year, including Atlantic Ave‑Barclays Center, Broadway‑Lafayette St and Flushing‑Main St.
The MTA selected CC Vending, Inc. to install and operate the kiosks under a five‑year contract that can be extended for another five years. The Coca‑Cola Company supplies the initial food and beverage offerings, which include chips, candy bars, nuts, soda and bottled water, as well as the option to sell technology, health and beauty products. MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said the machines are a low‑cost way to activate vacant retail spaces left empty after newsstands disappeared during the COVID‑19 pandemic. MTA Chief Customer Officer Shanifah Rieara added that the initiative “makes stations more welcoming” by turning unused areas into customer amenities. CC Vending President Michael Cascione described the rollout as “a new chapter for New York City’s subway system,” aimed at delivering a more convenient experience for millions of riders.
