MTA unveils renderings for proposed Brooklyn-Queens Interborough Express

The MTA has released new renderings for the proposed Interborough Express (IBX), a $5.5 billion light rail project designed to connect Brooklyn and Queens. The 14-mile line would repurpose the existing Bay Ridge Branch, running from the Brooklyn Army Terminal to Roosevelt Avenue in Queens, offering end-to-end travel in under 40 minutes.

The project includes 18 stations designed with “universal design principles” to maximize accessibility. Features include wider fare gates, elevators, tactile floor tiles, level boarding, and enhanced digital signage. To support the new line, the MTA is also working on accessibility upgrades at three existing subway stations that will connect to the IBX.

MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber stated that light rail was selected because it “moves fastest” and can carry the most passengers. Governor Kathy Hochul has requested the project be fast-tracked. While half of the funding is secured through the MTA's capital plan, the project's timeline may depend on federal contributions. A draft environmental impact statement is expected later this year.
