MTI journalists release 482-page document alleging news manipulation

The leadership of Hungary's public media provider, Duna Médiaszolgáltató Zrt., has released a 482-page document detailing alleged news manipulation at the state news agency, Magyar Távirati Iroda (MTI).

The collection, titled 'Narancs csíkos' (Orange Striped), was compiled by a group of MTI journalists and editors known as 'Pro Domo.' The group documented instances of censorship, news suppression, and the rewriting of reports to align with the political narrative of the Orbán government from August 2015 through the recent elections.

According to the documents, editorial decisions regarding international, economic, and public affairs were often made based on political considerations rather than professional standards. The collection includes evidence of direct orders to suppress specific stories or modify their content. While MTVA leadership maintains that the news in question met professional standards, they acknowledged that the content did not fit the government's communication goals. An internal investigation by Duna Médiaszolgáltató Zrt. is currently ongoing to determine responsibility.
