MTN and Telecel Ghana secure 5G spectrum from NCA

Ghana’s National Communications Authority (NCA) has awarded 5G spectrum to major telecommunications providers as part of a nationwide rollout to expand mobile broadband capacity.

MTN Ghana secured two lots in the 700 MHz band for USD 100.9 million. As the sole qualified applicant for this specific band, MTN’s acquisition is noted for its potential to provide better indoor coverage and wider geographic reach due to the frequency’s ability to travel longer distances.

Telecel Ghana was awarded three lots in the 2.3 GHz band. The company stated that this additional spectrum will strengthen its network expansion and improve service quality in preparation for its 5G rollout, contributing to the growth of Ghana’s digital economy.

The NCA’s spectrum assignment process also included the 3 GHz band, the results of which are still being determined.
