MTN Ghana faces Clydestone mobile money IP lawsuit

Clydestone Ghana Plc filed a writ of summons on 27 July 2026 in the Commercial Division of the High Court in Accra, alleging that MTN Ghana (Scancom Plc) and its affiliates used a proprietary commercial and operational framework developed for mobile money in 2007 without authorization or compensation. The fintech firm seeks declarations, damages and equitable remedies, claiming that the work was commissioned under a non‑disclosure agreement that was never finalised.

MTN Ghana has denied the allegations, stating the claims are without merit and that the legal proceedings do not affect its operations, services or mobile‑money business. The operator said it will fully contest the lawsuit. Mobile money remains a major revenue driver in Ghana, with about 19.3 million active users and annual revenue of roughly GHS 6 billion (US$516 million).
