MTN Ghana reduces tariffs following VAT rate reduction

MTN Ghana has implemented tariff reductions across its voice, data, and device financing services following a revision to the Value Added Tax (VAT) Act. The legislative change, effective January 1, reduced the effective VAT rate from 21.9 per cent to 20 per cent through the removal of the Health Recovery Levy and other technical adjustments. MTN responded by lowering prices within 24 hours to mirror the 1.9 percentage point tax reduction.

Beyond immediate consumer pricing, MTN Ghana has become a critical component of the nation's fiscal landscape. In 2025, the company paid approximately GH¢10.5 billion in direct and indirect taxes, representing nearly 6% of the total GH¢181.6 billion collected by the Ghana Revenue Authority. Including regulatory fees, the company's total fiscal contribution reached roughly GH¢11.8 billion, highlighting its significant role in Ghana's domestic revenue mobilization and digital economy.
