MTN Ghana secures US$100.9 million 700MHz spectrum deal

MTN Ghana, operated by Scancom Plc, has secured two lots of spectrum in the 700 MHz band for a total license fee of US$100.9 million. The National Communications Authority (NCA) confirmed that MTN Ghana was the sole qualified and successful applicant following a competitive allocation process.

The acquisition of this spectrum is part of a broader NCA program to assign frequencies in the 700 MHz, 2.3 GHz, and 3 GHz bands to support mobile broadband services and the expansion of 5G technology.

While the 700 MHz allocation is complete, the process for other bands continues. The 2.3 GHz band is currently under-subscribed, with four of the five available lots receiving applications from Telecel Ghana and GoIP Telecommunications Ltd. In contrast, the 3 GHz band has seen over-subscription, with applications for four lots submitted for only three available spaces by Scancom Plc and Telecel Ghana.
