MTN Group launches Pan-African Media Innovation Programme
MTN Group, the University of Johannesburg (UJ), and The African Editors’ Forum (TAEF) have launched the MTN Pan-African Media Innovation Programme. The initiative aims to strengthen journalism and build resilient media institutions across the continent in response to rapid digital shifts.
The inaugural cohort consists of 42 journalists, editors, and media practitioners participating in a six-week course. These professionals represent print, broadcast, digital, and independent newsrooms from 10 African countries, including South Africa, Nigeria, Rwanda, Eswatini, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, South Sudan, Zambia, and Benin.
The programme addresses modern challenges facing African newsrooms, such as evolving audience behaviors, strained revenue models, and the impact of artificial intelligence and global platforms. Nompilo Morafo, MTN Group Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer, stated that strong and independent media institutions are essential for informed societies and Africa’s progress.
