Météo France updates weather alert system to local scale
Météo France is transitioning its weather alert system from a departmental scale to an infra-departmental scale. This change allows for multiple levels of vigilance—such as yellow, orange, or red—to be applied within a single department to more accurately reflect localized extreme weather events.
The new system aims to better identify high-risk zones, such as coastal areas during storms or specific villages hit by tornadoes, allowing for more precise emergency resource allocation and citizen safety warnings. While specific areas within a department may receive different alert levels, the national map will continue to display the highest alert level assigned to any part of a given department.
