MTR Lam Tin Station experiences two incidents within 15 hours

Hong Kong's MTR Lam Tin Station experienced two separate technical incidents within a 15-hour period. The first occurred on the evening of the 13th, when an insulating rubber component in a track switch caught fire due to a short circuit. The second incident took place on the morning of the 14th, involving overheating wires in a power equipment room that produced smoke.

These incidents caused temporary station closures and disruptions to the Kwun Tong Line, with trains bypassing the station for approximately one hour before service returned to normal. MTR officials have replaced the damaged components and are conducting inspections of similar equipment during non-operational hours.

The government has expressed high concern regarding the consecutive failures. The Secretary for Transport and Logistics has directed MTR to conduct a comprehensive investigation into equipment, facilities, and maintenance, requiring a formal report to be submitted within one month. MTR plans to involve independent experts to investigate potential causes, including infrastructure wear, environmental factors, or operational issues.
