MTR partners with social services to support SEN passengers
MTR Corporation has launched several initiatives in collaboration with Hong Kong Christian Service and The Hong Kong Association for Integrated Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities to support passengers with Special Educational Needs (SEN).
To help mitigate sensory overload caused by crowds, noise, and announcements, MTR and the Hong Kong Association for Integrated Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities have equipped 99 heavy rail and light rail stations with 'Sensory Pouches.' These pouches contain small, reusable sensory toys, such as stress balls and textured liquid toys, which passengers can request from staff to help regulate their emotions during travel.
Additional support measures include enhanced training for frontline staff on communication techniques for SEN passengers, the development of interactive decompression games within the 'Careful Commuting' mobile app, and station guided tours for SEN students and caregivers. Furthermore, a traveling exhibition is being held across 11 stations through November to promote public understanding and inclusivity through immersive 360-degree sensory videos and interactive displays.
