Métropole de Lyon implements major social and environmental policy cuts
The Métropole de Lyon is implementing significant shifts in social and environmental policy following a change in leadership to a right-wing administration.
One major decision involves the immediate removal of a €120,000 annual subsidy previously allocated to approximately fifteen bicycle self-repair workshops across the territory. The Coordination Locale des Ateliers Vélo (La CLAVette) has organized protests, stating that these workshops provide a vital public service. The loss of funding is already impacting employment and threatening the permanent closure of several locations in areas such as Oullins, Vénissieux, and Lyon 8e.
Additionally, the new administration is moving to dismantle several social programs established by the previous ecological mandate. Key measures include the planned suppression of the Youth Solidarity Income (RSJ), the reduction of emergency housing availability, and the eviction of squats. Opposition leaders have criticized these moves as a targeted attack on the most vulnerable populations and a rejection of previous social hospitality policies.
